KiroIn 2001 Thilo Weigel started the research project “KiRo” (Kick Robot) during his doctoral thesis as Chair of artificial intelligence. The original robot-football table prototype was made using an everyday football table. Merkur Srarkick>

In 2003 a cooperation between the University and the Gauselmann concern was formed with the purpose of developing a marketable robot-football table under the name "Star Kick" from the original “KiRo” prototype.

It was first introduced to the market at the IMA (International trade fair for amusement and vending machines) in January 2005. Over the last four months 15 machines have been produced.
